College Democrats vs. College Republicans: The Great Debate: The College
Dems took on the College Republicans November 11, discussing everything from health care to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
President Amy Hartman moderated the debate while Steven, Mike, Angela, and John took on the tough issues. We might be
a little biased, but we definitely think we had a great victory! We appreciate
everyone who came out to support the group and especially those who contributed.
Health Care Reform Teach-in: As part of the College Democrats Health Care Reform campaign launched last
week, we will held a "teach-in" to educate our members and the campus community about health care issues.
Numerous healthcare experts showed us how to effectively advocate advocate for health care reform, especially to older generations
who are generally more resistant to change. Even our own Mike Besser shared his story! Thanks to all who came
out to become educated.
President Obama Electrifies Crowd at Maryland:
President Obama stopped by the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland on Thursday, September 17. He gave
a rousing speech about his Heathcare plan to a nearly full house of students, locals, and important figures in Maryland politics.
Governor O'Malley, Senator Mikulski, Senator Cardin, as well as Maryland Representatives and faces from the Maryland legislator
were in attendance. The event was even featured on The Rachel Maddow Show. Click here to see Rachel talk about the event.
"Ask Not" Screening Wednesday, September 23: At Wednesday's meeting, we screened "Ask
Not," a film about the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the military. Two men from the movie visited and discussed
their experiences being discharged from the military because of this controversial policy. It was truly remarkable to
hear them discuss the only sexual preference discrimination policy allowed in the United States and how it personally affected
their lives. The College Democrats appreciate their strength and courage in telling their story and also support the
repeal of this terrible, blatant discrimination.
